The
villa is a 10-15 minute walk to the centre of the historic
town of Kalkan, a small, peaceful and unspoilt harbour
town located along Turkey's gorgeous Lycian Coast.
Once an Ottoman-Greek fishing village previously known
as Kalamaki, Kalkan overlooks the crystal clear seas
of the Mediterranean whilst being sheltered by the
Taurus Mountains.
The town is full of character, made up of narrow cobbled streets leading down
to the bay. Aswell as having all local amenities
such as a pharmacy, post office and bank, the streets are lined with interesting
shops and boutiques which open early in the day and stay open until at least
midnight. Shopping is very accordable and includes ceramics, silver, hand blown
glass, hand-carved Meerschaum pipes and backgammon sets inlaid with mother-of-pearl.
Even more traditionally are the famous hand-woven rugs known as Kilims, boxes
of Turkish delight and the blue-coloured glass called the "evil eye" reputed
to ward off evil spirits. Kalkan also offers affordable clothing and excellent
tailoring. Thursday is market day, and is approximately a 10 minute walk from
the centre. In the centre there is plenty of transport,
from local taxis and dolmus (local bus) to larger coaches which travel as far
as Istanbul. |
